Kefalonia and Zakynthos in a Week

Island-hoppingBest BeachesFamiliesCouples

A week in the Ionian that spends five nights on Kefalonia for the cliffs, the caves and the mountain road, then crosses to Zakynthos for the shipwreck cove and the turtles. Both islands need a car and reward early starts.

Day by day

  1. 01

Fly into Kefalonia, base in Argostoli

Market in the morning, waterfront in the evening, and turtles from the De Bosset bridge at first light.

  2. 02

    North to Assos and Fiskardo

Drive up early. Swim in the bay at Assos, climb to the castle in the late afternoon, sleep in Fiskardo.

  3. 03

    Myrtos and the clifftop road

The view from the road above comes first, then the beach. Wind and swell can close the water.

  4. 04

    Melissani, then Antisamos

Be at Melissani when it opens; the boat trips are short and the queues build through the day.

  5. 05

    Mount Ainos

Go up early — cloud builds on the ridge by afternoon. Take a jacket; it is 10 degrees cooler than the coast.

  6. 06

    Cross to Zakynthos

Seasonal ferry across. Base in the town rather than the resort strip and eat better for less.

  7. 07

    The shipwreck cove by boat

Morning boat before the crowds and the wind. The clifftop view afterwards is the better half of the visit.
