The Verdict
A tiny village on a narrow neck of land with a Venetian castle above it, and the best swim on the island.
Why go
Assos sits on a small peninsula joined to the island by a narrow neck, its houses strung along a curving bay with the ruined walls of a sixteenth-century Venetian fortress covering the hill above. The village is one street and a couple of tavernas, and the small pebble beach in the bay is calm and clear enough to be the best swim on Kefalonia. Climb to the castle in the late afternoon for the view.
