Assos Castle

The Verdict

A Venetian fortress covering a whole headland above Assos, with pines growing through the walls and the best view on the island.

Why go

The castle was built by the Venetians in the sixteenth century to hold the north of Kefalonia, and its walls run right round the headland above the village of Assos with the bay below on both sides. Walk up from the village through the pines, about twenty minutes, then follow the ramparts; on a clear evening you can see across to Ithaca and the mountains of Lefkada.
