Skyros Kastro

The Verdict

A Byzantine stronghold on the summit above the town, with the whole island and both coasts laid out below it.

Why go

The kastro crowns the hill the town is built on, and you reach it on foot through the top of the town, which is half the point of going. Inside the walls stand two small churches and the shell of the old circuit, and from the top the Aegean shows on both sides of the island at once. Late afternoon is the time, when the light comes in from the west and the town below goes gold.
