Rupert Brooke's Grave

The Verdict

A poet's grave in an olive grove above an empty bay, reached by boat or a rough track — the oddest pilgrimage in the Sporades.

Why go

Rupert Brooke died of an infected bite aboard a hospital ship bound for Gallipoli in April 1915, at twenty-seven, and was buried the same night in an olive grove above the bay of Tris Boukes on the south coast of Skyros. The white marble stone stands above an empty beach with no road along the shore, in scrub and olives, with the sea below. Reach it by boat from the port or on the rough track down from the south of the island.
