Skyros Chora
Photo: Greece Field Guide
The Verdict
A flat-roofed town on a steep hill with the sea on both sides, and the most distinctive architecture in the Sporades.
Why go
Skyros town climbs a steep hill between the sea and the slope behind it, and its houses are flat-roofed white cubes, which looks like the Cyclades rather than the Sporades. The paved main street runs up to the Byzantine kastro on the summit, where the walls and the view are the best on the island; the beaches of Magazia and Molos are ten minutes down the hill. It is quiet, unhurried, and largely shut outside the summer.
Understand the place
