The Old Fortress
The Verdict
Climb it for the view back over the old town, not for the ruins. The walk up is the point.
Why go
Byzantine, Venetian, French and British hands all worked on this rock, and what survives is mostly bare stone, a Victorian church and a lot of wind. The reward is the view: the whole old town in front of you, the sea channel below and Albania on the horizon on a clear day. Go in the late afternoon when the stone turns gold and the coaches are gone.
Understand the place
The Venetian citadel on its own promontory east of Corfu Town, separated from the old town by a moat and a sea channel.
