The Liston colonnade and pastel Venetian buildings in the old town of Corfu.

Corfu Town

The Verdict

The one place in Corfu where the Venetian, French and British layers are all visible in a single afternoon walk. Stay inside the old town, not on the coast road.

Why go

Two fortresses, an arcaded esplanade and a maze of lanes between them hold more history per square metre than the rest of the island combined. Walk the Campiello early, before the cruise groups arrive, and climb the Old Fortress for the view back over the roofs. It is the best base for a first visit, though not for a beach holiday: the island's swimming is forty minutes away.
