Achilleion Palace

The Verdict

Kitsch imperial villa, genuinely good gardens. Worth an hour if you are already passing; not a reason to cross the island.

Why go

The palace is a fantasy about Achilles built by an unhappy empress, and the German Kaiser later bought it for the same reasons. The interiors are heavy and the Achilles statues are the best of them. What actually makes the stop work is the terraced garden and the view over the middle of Corfu. Come for the gardens, stay a little longer than you planned.

An empress's summer villa above Gastouri, built for Elisabeth of Austria and later used by the Kaiser, with formal gardens and a wide view of the island.
