The Verdict

The best explanation anywhere of why Tinos looks the way it does, told through the tools and the work.

Why go

Tinos’ marble tradition has shaped the whole island — the paved villages, the carved doorframes, the sculpture studios — and this museum in Pyrgos shows how the stone is worked, with tools, drawings and pieces from local workshops, and a section on the sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas. It is small, well arranged and an hour well spent before walking round the village.
