The Verdict

The marble village: paved in it, built in it, still carving it — the reason Tinos matters culturally.

Why go

Almost everything in Pyrgos is marble, including the square, the fountain and the doorframes, because the quarry above the village has been worked since antiquity. It is the home village of the sculptor Yannoulis Chalepas and still has working studios and a museum of marble crafts. The café under the plane tree in the square is the best stop on the island, and the village is twenty-five minutes by car from Chora.
