The Verdict

A stone village on a headland above the sea with a view across the gulf — the best-looking village in Halkidiki.

Why go

Afytos sits on a headland on the Kassandra peninsula, its houses built of local grey stone with narrow lanes between them and a paved terrace above the sea where the church stands. It is the one Halkidiki village that kept its architecture rather than turning into apartments, and it has the best view in the region: the whole gulf, and the sun going down into it. Eat in the square, then walk the terrace as the light goes.
