The Verdict

The village under the rocks: houses at the foot of the Meteora cliffs, closer to the monasteries than Kalambaka and much quieter.

Why go

Kastraki sits directly under the Meteora rocks, so the monasteries hang above the rooftops and the walk up to the first of them takes twenty minutes. It is smaller and quieter than Kalambaka, with one street of tavernas and guesthouses and a good bakery, and the view of the cliffs from the village in the evening, when the light crosses the rock sideways, is the reason to stay here rather than in town.
