The Verdict

A village at the head of an inlet so enclosed it reads as a fjord, with a few tavernas and water you can swim in.

Why go

Vathi sits at the head of a long, narrow inlet on the north side of Kalymnos, enclosed by hills so completely that it reads as a fjord, with the entrance from the sea barely visible from the village. There are a few tavernas round the water, a small beach at the head of the inlet, and a village that fills in high season and empties in winter. Combine it with the west coast — the drive over the ridge is the best half-hour on the island.
