Olympos

The Verdict

A village on a ridge at the north end of Karpathos where the local dress is still worn and the dialect is barely Greek to other Greeks.

Why go

Olympos sits along a ridge in the far north of Karpathos, and until the road reached it in the 1970s it was effectively cut off. That shows: the local dialect is its own, women still wear the traditional dress into their eighties, and the village makes its own bread, pasta and sweets to sell. Walk the length of the ridge, eat at a table on a terrace above the sea, and buy something from the bakery.
