Pyrgi

The Verdict

A fortified village of tall houses covered in scratched geometric patterns — the strangest architecture in the Aegean.

Why go

Pyrgi is the biggest of the mastic villages, and the houses are covered in xysta: patterns scratched through black plaster to reveal the white lime beneath, so whole facades are worked in triangles, circles and diamonds. The village was built defensively, the houses joined in a ring around a central square, with the church of Agioi Apostoloi decorated inside in the same manner. It is fifteen minutes from the coast and the mastic groves surround it on all sides.
