Apella Beach
Photo: Greece Field Guide
The Verdict
A long beach under pine trees on the east coast, reached by a road of hairpins — the best swim on Karpathos.
Why go
Apella sits in a bay at the end of a steep road with pine trees coming down to the sand, which is not what you expect on a dry Dodecanese island. There is one taverna, some sunbeds, and water that drops off clear and blue within a few metres of the shore. The drive is part of the visit — the bay opens below you on the way down. Get there before noon if you want shade; the wind usually arrives in the afternoon.
Understand the place
A sand-and-pebble beach in a bay on the northeast coast of Karpathos, with pines, clear water and a single taverna.
