The Verdict

A small Venetian harbour village that survived the 1953 earthquake, and the handsomest place to stay in the Ionian.

Why go

Fiskardo’s stone and pastel houses around a tight harbour came through the 1953 earthquake intact, which makes it the one place on Kefalonia that looks genuinely old. Yachts moor at the quay through the summer and the waterfront fills at night, but the lanes behind are small and quiet, with pines and cypresses coming down to the water and good swimming off the rocks at the harbour mouth. Book well ahead for July and August.
