The Verdict

A working Ionian capital with a stone bridge across its lagoon and turtles in the harbour — plain, alive, and the right base on Kefalonia.

Why go

Argostoli was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake in a plain modern style, so it is not beautiful the way Fiskardo is, but it is a real town: a long waterfront, a busy market, good cheap food, and the De Bosset bridge running across the lagoon, where loggerhead turtles surface in the mornings. Everything on the island is reachable from here, and unlike the northern villages it stays open in winter.
