Melissani Cave

The Verdict

An underground lake with daylight falling on it through a hole in the roof — short, crowded, and unlike anywhere else in Greece.

Why go

Melissani is a collapsed cave near Sami where a boat takes you out across a turquoise lake lit partly by the sun through the opening above; around midday the light lands on the water and the colour is hard to believe. The visit lasts about fifteen minutes and the queues in August are long, so come at opening or late in the afternoon. It is the one sight on Kefalonia worth stopping for on the way to Sami.
