Mount Ainos National Park

The Verdict

A mountain of dark fir above the Ionian — the one place on Kefalonia where you leave the coast behind.

Why go

Mount Ainos rises to about 1,600 metres and carries a national park of Greek fir, a tree found almost nowhere else, with a rough road winding up through black pine to a viewpoint that reaches the Peloponnese on a clear day. It is cooler, greener and far emptier than the coast. Take a jacket: the summit is regularly in cloud while the beaches are in full sun.
