Zakynthos Town
Photo: Greece Field Guide
The Verdict
A rebuilt town with an Italian streak — a wide paved square, arcades, a working harbour and the best eating on the island.
Why go
The 1953 earthquake and the fire that followed destroyed almost everything, and the town was rebuilt quickly in a style that leans on Venetian models: arcades, a broad paved square, a long waterfront. It is the island's working centre, which means it stays open in winter, the market is worth walking, and the tavernas are better and cheaper than anything on the resort strip. The ferries dock here, and so do the boats that run the coast trips.
