The sheltered inlet and sandy beach at Vathi on Sifnos, ringed by white houses.

Vathi

The Verdict

The island's calmest swim, and its quietest evening. Worth the drive when the meltemi is up and everywhere else is windy.

Why go

The bay is almost closed, so the water stays flat when the north wind is blowing on the other side of the island, and the sand goes out shallow for a long way. The village around the bay is small and low-key, with a handful of tavernas that fill at dinner. Come for the afternoon and stay to eat, then drive back up in the dark.

Understand the place

A deep, protected inlet in the south-west of Sifnos, with genuinely still water and houses built around the bay.
