Whitewashed lanes and a small square in the hill town of Apollonia on Sifnos.

Apollonia

The Verdict

A working island town rather than a resort, and that is exactly why Sifnos still feels like itself. Base here, not on a beach road.

Why go

The island centre is a string of linked neighbourhoods along a ridge, with a pedestrian main street, a real market and squares where the island actually eats. Kamares, the port, is fifteen minutes downhill and the beaches are scattered in every direction, so a car helps. What Apollonia gives you is the thing Sifnos does best: evenings that belong to residents rather than to visitors.
