Chrysopigi Monastery
The Verdict
Go early, when the water below is still flat and the coaches have not arrived. It is the best twenty minutes on the island.
Why go
The monastery sits on a wedge of rock separated from the coast by a narrow channel, reached by a short bridge, with the sea on both sides. Inside there is little to see; outside, the position does all the work. Below the bridge there is good swimming in clear water, and the walk along the headland takes you away from the car park. Morning light is best.
Understand the place
The monastery on its own rock at the mouth of a bay, joined to the shore by a small bridge, and the image everyone associates with Sifnos.
