The Monastery of Panormitis

The Verdict

A working monastery at the head of a bay, with a peacock in the courtyard and a very large church.

Why go

Panormitis is a working monastery at the head of a bay on the south coast, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, and the one place on Symi people make a pilgrimage to — sailors leave models of their boats in the church. The building is enormous and bright with votive offerings, the courtyard has peacocks in it, and the bay itself is a good swim. Boats run there from Gialos in season, or you can take the long road round.
