Symi Town (Gialos)

The Verdict

A harbour of honey-coloured houses on both sides of a bay, with no cars on the waterfront and water taxis leaving for the beaches.

Why go

Gialos is the harbour, and it is all waterfront: tavernas, sponge shops and boatmen selling trips to the beaches. Behind it the Kali Strata, a staircase of some five hundred steps, climbs to Chorio, the old town, where the houses are plainer and the life is ordinary. Walk up in the evening for the view down onto the harbour, when the day boats have gone and the colour of the houses has turned gold.
