Profitis Ilias Monastery
The Verdict
An hour of climbing for a view over the whole Saronic Gulf. Do it in the morning, before the heat and before the day boats land.
Why go
The path leaves Hydra Town and climbs steadily through pine, then through nothing but thorn and rock, to a working monastery on the ridge. The view takes in the Peloponnese mountains, the Argolid peninsula and the island's own bare interior. There is water at the monastery in season and a small museum, but the climb itself is the point. Start early; there is no shade for the last stretch.
Understand the place
A whitewashed monastery on the island's highest ridge, reached on foot through pine and bare rock.
