Stone captains' houses around the small harbour of Hydra Town.

Hydra Town

The Verdict

It empties completely at five, when the day boats leave. That silence, and the swimming rocks beyond the port, are what you are paying for.

Why go

There are no cars and no scooters, so the only traffic is donkeys and the only way out of town is on foot or by boat. The harbour is the photograph everyone knows, but the real town is the steep lanes behind it, where shipping families built houses that outgrew a small island. Stay at least one night. By early evening the day-trippers have gone and Hydra becomes a different, much better place.
