The medieval village of Kastro on Sifnos, built on a headland above the sea.

Kastro

The Verdict

The oldest and strangest thing on Sifnos. Twenty minutes is enough for the church; an hour is what the lanes deserve.

Why go

The village is a closed loop: the outer houses are the wall, and the lanes behind them curl around a small summit with a church on top and sea on three sides. Fragments of ancient stone are built into the corners of buildings that were never meant to be read as ruins. Come in the late afternoon, walk the full circuit, and stay for the view back along the coast.
