Rust-red volcanic cliffs above dark pebbles and blue water at Red Beach, Santorini.

Red Beach

The Verdict

The cliffs earn ten minutes and no more. The beach is pebbles, the crowds are constant, and the rockfall notices are not decorative.

Why go

The colour of the cliff is genuinely startling, and it is the best example of the island's volcanic geology anywhere you can walk to. Beyond that the visit is short: a strip of dark pebbles, sunbeds packed in, and a path in from the car park that is closed when there is any risk of falling rock. Photograph it from the headland, then swim at Vlychada or Perissa instead.
