The Verdict

A stone village climbing to a Byzantine castle with a small harbour below — the postcard corner of Lesvos, and better after six.

Why go

Molyvos, also called Mithymna, climbs a hill above the north coast with a Byzantine castle crowning it and a small harbour at the bottom. It is the one place on Lesvos that looks like a picture: grey stone, red roofs, bougainvillea, and a street of small shops rising to the castle gate, with the sea below and the coast of Turkey on the horizon. Day visitors come up from the harbour; stay the night and you get the village at eight in the evening, which is when it is worth having come.
