Chalki
The Verdict
Stop here on the way up to Apeiranthos rather than instead of it. Lunch under the plane tree is the reason.
Why go
Chalki was the old centre of the island's emery trade and most of the village is abandoned stone houses on the slope above the road. What remains is the square, with a huge plane tree and a couple of tavernas serving the valley around it, plus a handful of Byzantine churches in the back lanes with fragments of fresco. It is a half-hour stop that is really an hour.
Understand the place
A quiet inland village of stone houses, Byzantine churches and a plane-tree square on the road up to Apeiranthos.
