The marble-paved lanes and stone houses of Apeiranthos on the slopes of Mount Fanari, Naxos.

Apeiranthos

The Verdict

The best inland stop on Naxos. Two hours, and eat while you are here.

Why go

The whole village is paved in marble from local quarries, which makes walking it a pleasure, and the houses are stone rather than whitewashed, so it looks nothing like the Cyclades of the postcards. It has kept its own dialect and its own opinions, and there are three small museums and enough tavernas to make a long lunch of it. The drive up from the coast takes twenty-five minutes.
