The Verdict

The old capital, half in ruins and half rebuilt — the best hour you will spend on Alonissos, especially at sunset.

Why go

Old Chora stands on the hill above the port, and the 1965 earthquake left it half ruined and half restored, which makes for a strange, quiet hour of walking: stone houses with fallen roofs beside rebuilt ones with washing on the line, a ruined Venetian castle at the top, and tavernas with the whole island laid out below. Go in the evening for the light on the water and stay for dinner.
