The Verdict
The quiet one: a small island inside Europe's largest marine park, with a half-ruined hill village, a working port, and clear water.
Why go
Alonissos sits inside the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades, the largest protected marine area in Europe, which keeps the water clear, the fishing small and the building low. Three places matter: Patitiri, the port, with tavernas on the quay; the old Chora on the hill above, half rebuilt after the 1965 earthquake and with the best view in the Sporades; and a west coast of small beaches at Agios Dimitrios, Chrisi Milia and Vithisma. Boats run out to the uninhabited islands, where the seals are.
Understand the place
The most peaceful of the inhabited Sporades, wrapped in a marine park that protects monk seals and the seabed around it.

Towns & villages

Patitiri
The harbour village where the Alonissos ferries dock, with tavernas on the quay and the road up to the old Chora behind it.
“The port of Alonissos: a stone quay, tavernas on the water, and the boat trips to the marine park leaving from the end of it.”

Old Chora
The hilltop village above Patitiri that was the island's capital until the 1965 earthquake, with castle ruins and the widest view in the Sporades.
“The old capital, half in ruins and half rebuilt — the best hour you will spend on Alonissos, especially at sunset.”
