Skiathos

The Verdict
The Sporades with an airport and a nightlife: pine woods over most of it, a single bus route of sandy beaches, and a town that stays up late.
Why go
Skiathos is forty-eight square kilometres, most of it pine forest, with a road of sandy beaches along the south coast: Koukounaries with its wetland behind, Vromolimnos, Agia Eleni, Mandraki, and Lalaria at the north end under white cliffs, which you can only reach by boat. The town is the other half of the case for coming — the Bourtzi peninsula, the old harbour, and a genuinely late bar scene. It is the easiest Sporades island to reach, with flights and frequent ferries, and the least quiet one in August.
Understand the place
The busiest of the Sporades — a small, pine-covered island with sandy beaches strung along one coast and a harbour town that parties.

Beaches

Koukounaries Beach
A wide sandy beach on the southwest coast of Skiathos, backed by the pines of a protected wetland, with the island bus stopping behind it.
“The most famous beach in the Sporades: a long crescent of sand with a pine forest behind it and a protected wetland inside it.”

Lalaria Beach
A white pebble beach below the cliffs at the north end of Skiathos, reached by excursion boat from the town harbour.
“White pebbles under white cliffs with a rock arch standing in the water, and no way to get there but a boat.”
