The Verdict
A harbour town fitted around a wooded peninsula, with the best restaurants on the island and a bar scene that runs until four.
Why go
Skiathos Town is a small harbour town with a wooded peninsula, the Bourtzi, cutting into it, and the whole of the island's evening life packed into a few streets behind the quay. Eat on the old harbour, walk out to the Bourtzi for the view back over the rooftops, and look at the house of the novelist Alexandros Papadiamantis, who was born here and wrote most of what Greeks read about island life. The beaches along the south coast are reachable by the island bus from the harbour.
Understand the place
The port of Skiathos — the old harbour, the Bourtzi peninsula, the Papadiamantis house, and a summer crowd that arrives for the evening.
