The Street of the Knights in the medieval old town of Rhodes.

Rhodes Town

The Verdict

The only honest reason to start a Rhodes trip here rather than on the beach. Give the old town two nights and walk it after dark, when the cruise crowds are back on board.

Why go

Inside the walls the Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master and the old hospital run in a line, and the Ottoman quarter behind them is a working neighbourhood of courtyards and mosques. Everything is walkable and everything is at its best before nine and after seven. Use it as a base: the island's best beaches are a drive away, but this is where Rhodes makes its case.

Understand the place

The best-preserved medieval city in the Mediterranean: a walled Knights' town, an Ottoman quarter and a modern harbour city beside them.
