The Acropolis of Lindos

The Verdict

The best ancient site in the Dodecanese, and worth the climb. Walk up before nine or after five, or ride a donkey and feel bad about it.

Why go

Three thousand years of building sit on one small summit: a Classical temple, a Hellenistic colonnade, a Byzantine church and a Crusader fort, all looking down on a bay that would be famous even without them. The climb takes twenty minutes in the heat and the view from the top is the best on Rhodes. Stay in the village overnight and you get the site, and the bay, almost to yourself in the evening.

A temple of Athena on a sheer rock above the village and bay of Lindos, with Hellenistic stoa and a Knights' castle on the same summit.
