The whitewashed village of Pyrgos climbing a hill to a ruined Venetian castle on Santorini.

Pyrgos Kallistis

The Verdict

The one village on Santorini that behaves least like a resort, and the sane alternative to paying caldera prices in Oia.

Why go

Pyrgos climbs in concentric lanes to a castle at the summit, with the whole island laid out below: caldera on one side, the flat vineyard plain on the other. Because it is inland and has no caldera view, it has stayed a real village, and a handful of small hotels have moved in without changing that. Stay two nights and you get the island without the crush. Sunset from the castle is the best on Santorini.

Understand the place

The highest village on Santorini, built in rings around a hill with a ruined Venetian castle at the top, away from the caldera.
