The Verdict

A wide sandy bay where loggerhead turtles nest every summer — the most important nesting beach in the Mediterranean, with a party strip at one end.

Why go

Laganas Bay is where loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay in summer, and it is the most important nesting site in the Mediterranean: the beach is protected, nests are fenced off and there are rules about sunbeds and about being on the sand at night. The bay itself is long, flat and shallow, which suits families, and the far end runs into the resort strip that gives Zakynthos its party reputation. Go at dawn to see the tracks from the night before, and keep well back from anything that moves.
