The Blue Caves

The Verdict

Arches and caves in the cliffs at the north end of Zakynthos where the water turns an electric blue.

Why go

At the northern tip of Zakynthos the cliffs are pierced by arches and caves, and inside them the water lights up blue against the pale rock — the effect is reflection rather than depth, but it is startling all the same. Boats run from Agios Nikolaos and from Zakynthos Town in season, usually combined with the shipwreck cove, and the light is best in the late morning. It is a popular trip: take the first boats out if you want the caves to yourself.
