The Verdict
The only Cycladic town that feels like a city, and a pleasant one: marble squares, arcades, a theatre, and a harbour that works all year.
Why go
Ermoupoli was built by shipowners and merchants in the nineteenth century and it shows: a great marble-paved square, arcaded streets, a small serious theatre and, in Vaporia, the captains' houses stacked above the water. It is a real town with schools, shops and winter life, which no other Cycladic port quite is, and small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes. Base here rather than in a beach village.
Understand the place
The capital of Syros and of the Cyclades — a neoclassical port town of marble paving and pastel facades, built on twin hills in the 1820s.
