Vaporia

The Verdict

Two streets of captains' mansions hanging over the water, and the best place in the Cyclades to swim at dawn inside a town.

Why go

Vaporia is the old shipowners' quarter: a pocket of pastel neoclassical houses on the slope between Ano Syros and the water, with the church of Agios Nikolaos at the bottom. There is no beach, but there are rock platforms and ladders into deep clear water, used by locals from early morning. It is ten minutes' walk from the main square and the handsomest ten minutes on the island; several of the mansions now take guests.
