The Apollon Theatre

Photo: Greece Field Guide

The Verdict

A pocket-sized nineteenth-century theatre with gilded boxes and a painted ceiling, still in use and still worth an evening.

Why go

Built in 1864 and modelled on La Scala by the Italian architect Pietro Sampò, the Apollon is small enough that every seat feels close to the stage, and the interior — tiers of boxes, painted ceiling, deep red upholstery — has come through almost unchanged. It stands on Miaoulis Square at the centre of Ermoupoli. Concerts, plays and chamber music run through the summer; check at the box office rather than trusting any schedule.
