Ano Mera
The Verdict
The real Mykonos: a working village inland where the island keeps living regardless of the season.
Why go
Ano Mera was the island's centre long before the harbour became one, and the paved square in front of the monastery is where that still shows: a bakery, a butcher, and cafés with men playing backgammon in the shade. The monastery is worth ten minutes, the square more. It is also a useful lunch stop if you are crossing the island to the south-coast beaches.
Understand the place
The main inland village of Mykonos, with the island's largest monastery and a square that runs to its own rhythm.
