Skopelos Chora

The Verdict

An amphitheatre of white houses above a harbour, a church on almost every corner, and steep lanes between them.

Why go

The chora climbs a hill in tiers around the harbour, which makes almost every street a flight of steps and every corner a viewpoint. It has more than a hundred small churches, most of them locked, a handful of tavernas on the waterfront and another set of bars just above. Ferries come into the harbour and the buses to the beaches leave from it. Base here rather than in the north of the island.
