Samos Town

The Verdict

A town wrapped round a deep harbour with hills of ochre houses above it — practical rather than pretty, and the island's transport hub.

Why go

Samos Town, or Vathy, curls around a bay so sheltered that it works as a harbour in any weather. The waterfront is tavernas and ticket offices; the streets behind climb into the old town, with the marble lion of Bavaria on the quay below the church of Agios Spyridon. It is not as charming as Pythagoreio, but it is where the ferries dock, where the buses start and where the market is, which counts for a lot on an island this size.
