The Verdict
A harbour built round a fishing port with a medieval castle above it, and the best eating on Samos.
Why go
Pythagoreio stands on the site of the ancient capital and takes its name from Pythagoras, who was born on the island. The harbour is small and full of fishing boats, the castle of Lykourgos Logothetis sits on the headland above it with its walls running down towards the water, and the entire waterfront is tavernas, which makes it a far better place to stay than the port. The tunnel of Eupalinos, an aqueduct bored through the hill in the sixth century BC, is a short drive away.
Understand the place
